When you search "best AEO tools," you're inevitably faced with the same issue. There are many options, and there are very few details about what each tool actually evaluates, with many tools measuring completely different things. Some tools evaluate your website. Some measure how your brand is mentioned in ChatGPT on a week-by-week basis. Some only suggest ways to improve your writing. Considering all these options to be similar is why people often end up buying a tool that doesn't help them answer their question.
We took a look at 10 tools that people typically search for as AEO tools. These included scanning tools that you pay for and that you do not pay for, as well as tools that help you create better content. We took into consideration the actual purpose of the tools, the pricing, and what we could see as the possible limits for each of these tools.
We personally executed (three tools, our tool and two other technical free tool scanners) the action for this. The rest, we evaluated based on the vendors' pricing and selling features. A decent and fair comparison of six-plus paid SaaS tools is something that no reviewer, including the vendors ranking themselves first, can honestly say that they have "tested" hands-on.
What Makes a Good AEO Tool
At a minimum, a proper AEO audit tool needs to check if AI crawlers like GPTBot and PerplexityBot can access your pages, if you have proper schema types for citation (i.e., FAQPage, Article, Organization), and if your content is designed to be extractable, instead of hidden under a lengthy introduction.
A tool that only checks one of these areas is only telling you part of the story. If it only checks schema, you may still be vulnerable to AI crawlers like GPTBot and PerplexityBot if your robots.txt still permits the crawlers.
We built our own Free AEO Checker around this exact gap, and it's why our Complete AEO Guide treats crawlability as the gatekeeper signal, not one item on a longer list.
A tool that checks schema but not crawlability is measuring half the problem. If bots cannot reach the page, nothing else on that page matters. - Website AEO and GEO Checker
AEO Tool Is an Umbrella Term for Four Different Jobs
This is where most comparison lists get people into trouble. "AEO tool" gets used for four genuinely different jobs, and picking the wrong category is the most common mistake we see.
| What you actually want | The job | Tools that do this |
|---|---|---|
| Know if your site is technically readable and citable by AI right now | One-time technical check | Website AEO Checker, AEOChecker.ai, AEO-Agent |
| Know how AI models currently describe your brand from memory | One-time brand-perception check | HubSpot AEO Grader |
| Track citations, mentions, and sentiment on an ongoing basis | Continuous AEO tracking | Profound, Semrush AI Toolkit, SE Ranking AI Search, Scrunch AI, Peec AI, Ahrefs Brand Radar |
| Write pages structured to actually get cited | Content optimization | Frase, and similar content-brief tools |
A one time technical check and a subscription to a service that performs periodic checks are not mutually exclusive, because they provide different answers for different phases of the same problem. The first must be done prior to the consideration of the latter.
How AEO Tracking Platforms Actually Work
Based on the other subscription services in the table below, it is useful to know what is going on behind the dashboard, as the quality gap between the services is usually due to which of these steps they skip.
- Prompt selection. You (or the platform) define the questions a real buyer would ask, not just your brand name, but comparison and "best X for Y" phrasing too.
- Multi-engine querying. The platform runs those prompts against the AI engines you're tracking, ideally weekly, since a single run on a non-deterministic model is a screenshot, not a trend.
- Mention extraction. The response gets parsed for whether your brand appeared, where in the answer, and whether it was quoted directly or paraphrased.
- Citation parsing. The platform pulls every URL the engine actually cited, so you know which of your pages, or a competitor's, is feeding the answer.
- Longitudinal tracking. All of the above gets logged over time so you can tell a real trend from normal week-to-week noise.
If a service only does the first 3 steps, do not expect much from it aside from mention tracking, and this is a consideration worth checking before you lock in an annual subscription.

Best Free AEO Tool
Among the three free technical checkers, depth varies more than the pricing suggests. AEOChecker.ai runs a single-page scan and keeps things minimal by design, useful for a fast sanity check before you publish, but it will not tell you if your site-wide crawlability is broken. AEO-Agent's free checker checks more factors up front, 20 or more, but its content-quality analysis sits behind a paid tier, so the free version stops at technical structure.
Our checker is unique because it runs over 50 tests for free in 5 categories: crawlability, schema, content format, authority signals, and page speed. There's no sign-up required to run the tests. Because of the lack of a sign-up, we distinguish ourselves from other AEO audit lead generators.
Real example: Nadia, a freelance SEO consultant, ran the same client site through 3 different free AEO checkers in one afternoon. She got 3 different scores, one in the low 30s, one near 60, one that would not load past the homepage. She assumed the tools disagreed. What she actually found was that each one was scoring a different slice of the problem, one tested schema only, other tested crawlability only; Once she ran the site through a checker covering all 5 categories, the low score made sense: GPTBot was blocked by a firewall rule none of the single-factor tools had flagged. She fixed the block. The site's citation status changed on the next crawl cycle.
Best AEO Tool for Ongoing Tracking
HubSpot's free grader, along with the three other free tools, does not include a technical checker that tracks changes over time. Profound, Semrush AI Toolkit, AI Search by SE Ranking, Scrunch, Peec AI, and Ahrefs Brand Radar focus on another purpose and do not include a technical score tracker. If you desire tracking for mention and citation history, those tools would be best. For tracking changes to technical scores without a subscription, run a free technical score checker monthly and log the score changes.
Best AEO Tool for Enterprise, Multi-Engine Coverage
If engine breadth is the deciding factor, Profound's Enterprise tier covers the most ground, up to 10 engines including Claude, Grok, Meta AI, and DeepSeek, though its entry Starter tier is limited to ChatGPT only, so the real coverage sits behind the higher-priced plan. Scrunch AI's jump from 4 engines (Core) to 9 (Enterprise) follows a similar pattern. Ahrefs Brand Radar's differentiator isn't engine count so much as the size of its underlying prompt dataset, over 300 million monthly organic prompts pulled from real search behavior rather than a synthetic prompt list, which matters if you want your tracked queries to reflect what people are actually asking.
Best AEO Audit Tool for Agencies
Free, one-time use tools quickly become impractical to agencies with multiple clients because of the lack of history tracking for each account. Peec AI adds automated tracking data and suggests strategies for clients. Because of the user thresholds in Peec, Semrush, and Ahrefs, if your agency runs the bulk of its SEO work through them, they'll be easier to justify than other solutions.
For the initial audit on any new client site, though, a free AEO audit tool covering all five signal categories is still the fastest way to find out what actually needs fixing before recommending a paid tool at all.
Common Mistakes When Choosing an AEO Tool
A few patterns show up again and again once people start shopping in this category.
- Treating a one-time grader as if it's tracking. A single free scan tells you where you stand today. It cannot tell you whether last month's content fix actually worked. Only a tool run on a repeat schedule can do that.
- Only checking one engine. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews each pull from different sources and behave differently. A brand that's well cited on one can be invisible on another.
- Buying tracking before fixing the technical foundation. According to Conductor's 2026 AEO and GEO Benchmarks Report, AEO scores built on technical and structural signals correlate strongly with actual citation rates. Paying to track a citation problem before fixing the crawler block causing it just tracks the same problem getting worse.
- Ignoring sentiment. Being mentioned in a negative answer is worse than not being mentioned. A tracking tool that only counts mentions, without checking how you're described, can't flag that.
- Assuming free means inaccurate. For narrowly defined technical checks, crawlability and schema presence are concrete and verifiable. Free versus paid is a question of scope and history, not necessarily accuracy.
